Arlington, Texas – The long-awaited rematch between two of the best women boxers occurred in one of the biggest stages ever. The match served as the co-main event to the global boxing event between headliners Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.
Netflix reported staggering figures, with 60 million households tuning in to watch the main event and 50 million tuning in to watch the epic battle between Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) and Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs). With 72,000 in attendance at the AT&T Stadium, the match was the highest-viewed women’s sporting event in history.
Amanda Serrano applied smart pressure and nearly scored a knockdown in the 1st round, stunning Katie Taylor with a hard left. Katie seemed affected by the punch for the first three rounds, looking somewhat stunned and still recovering from the punch. Getting off to an unusual slow start.
Katie was hesitant and cautious; it wasn’t until Serrano suffered a nasty cut over her right eye that Taylor began to heavily trade with Serrano. The cut was the result of one of many headbutts Taylor gave Serrano. The fight itself was a war, one that saw both fighters throw 1,263 punches between the two. Amanda outlanded Taylor 324 to 217, respectively.
Landing 58.2 percent of her punches. Taylor’s face showed the brutality of Serrano’s punches at the post-fight press conference. Taylor required stitches and had swelling on most of her face – – showing swollen eyes, lips, nose, and forehead.
Serrano suffered minimal damage with the exception of the nasty cut over her right eye. The two fought to a controversial decision, where Taylor was awarded a unanimous decision despite having a point deduction for excessive head butting in round 8. All three judges scored 95-94 for Taylor.
Debatably, the first match appeared to be much closer than the second, as Serrano appeared to have earned an early lead. The controversial decision should not, however, take away from the match between two great warriors who gave it their all. Neither one relented, demonstrating to the world why they are two of the best boxers in the world.
At the post-fight press conference both promoters Eddie Hearn and Nakisa Bidarian vocalized interest in a third match, expressing the desires of both Taylor and Serrano. If a third match does occur, it should be just as great as the first two. Both have a warrior spirit and should be commended for their efforts. It’s rare to see great fights, much rarer to see two between the same individuals.
