Before a sold-out crowd at the RAC Arena in Perth, Western Australia, on Saturday, broadcast over ESPN, IBO World Lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. was stopped by former two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-division world champion Vasyl Lomachenko in the eleventh round of the fight for the vacant IBF World Lightweight title. Lomachenko secured the stoppage at 2:49 of the eleventh round in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds. He was leading on the scorecards, with two judges scoring it 99-91 and the third 98-92
In the opening round southpaw Lomachenko showed good movement outpointing Kambosos with his jab in a feeling out round. In the second round Lomachenko continued out boxing Kambosos until the final thirty seconds when Kambosos landed a left to the body getting the attention of Lomacheko who took another round. In the third rounds final minute Lomachenko backed Kambosos into a corner landing a left uppercut on the chin rattling Kambosos. At the bell both mixed it up.
In the fourth round Lomacheko landed triple jabs to the chin of Kambosos. In the final minute Lomachenko’s scoring from angles had Kambosos confused with a 21-1 connect advantage for Lomachenko. In the fifth rounds last fifteen seconds Lomachenko knocked Kambosos off balance with a lead left on the side of the head.
In the sixth rounds final minute Kambosos landed his best punch up to this point with a right to the body of Lomachenko. In the seventh rounds final minute Lomachenko landed a left to the body of Kambosos getting his attention. In the eighth round Lomachenko cut the right eyelid of Kambosos with a hard left halfway through the round.
In the ninth round the blood was streaming down the face from the cut on Kambosos taking a beating but never stop trying. In the tenth rounds final minute the first clinch of the fight as Referee Katsuhiko Nakamura separated them. Lomachenko won another round as Kambosos only landed one punch.
In the eleventh rounds final seconds Lomachenko dropped Kambosos sidewise with a left to the body for an 8-count from referee Nakamura. Lomachenko went right after him dropping him a second time with a left to the body as referee waved it off as the towel came in from the corner of Kambosos.
WBA World Bantam champ Nina Hughes, 6-1 (2), #117 ½, of Billericay, Essex, UK, lost by split decision to Cherneka ‘Neekz’ Johnson, 15-2 (6), #116 ¾, of Melbourne, Victoria, AUST, over 10×2 rounds.
In the first two rounds the taller Johnson used an effective jab. In the third and fourth rounds Hughes got inside the reach outscoring Johnson.
From the fifth through the seventh rounds Hughes came back well. In the eighth Johnson had an edge. In the ninth and tenth rounds Johnson seemed to pull out the win if not ending in a draw.
Referee Bill Seth Scores 95-95, 96-94 and 98-92 for Johnson after announcing the opposite by the ring announcer.
Former WBC Light Fly champ Pedro ‘Jibran Pedrin’ Guevara, 42-4-1 (22), #115, of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, MEX, won by split decision over WBO Global Super Fly champ Andrew Moloney, 26-4 (16), #114 ½, of Kingscliff, New So. Wales, AUST, over 12 rounds, for vacant WBC Interim World Super Fly title.
In the first round Moloney had a slight edge countering Guevara. In the second through the fifth Guevara worked the body having an edge outworking Moloney.
In the sixth through the eighth rounds Guevara going to the body of Moloney had the edge. In the ninth and tenth rounds Moloney came back well enough to take the rounds. In the eleventh and twelfth rounds both scored well with little to choose between them.
