Undefeated, highly rated super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko (15-6, 10 KOs) by a non-impressive, foul-filled ten-round unanimous decision on Saturday night in the main event of their clash at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
The scores were 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92. A more accurate one would be 97-93, but it’s not a shock that they were wide for Mbilli because he’s local now.
Derevyanchenko, 38, fought with just his right hand from the fifth round after injuring his left bicep late in round four. Once the injury occurred, Derevyanchenko was limited to what he could do, and Mbilli took advantage of the injury by walking him down, landing punches to the head and body.
Mbilli’s Illegal Tactics
Derevyanchenko fought as well as he could with one arm, targeting Mbilli’s body, and hitting frequently with rights to the head due to his nonexistent defense. The 29-year-old Mbilli’s defense was offensive, and a big part of that was rabbit punches, unfortunately.
The referee stood and watched all night, not lifting a finger to address the illegal punches to the back of the head that Mbilli went out of his way to land. It was pretty blatant from Mbilli. He had this move where he would use one arm to pull Derevyanchenko’s head down and then nail him with beautiful textbook illegal rabbit punches with the free hand.
The form on these rabbit shots were beautiful, but it was troublesome that the referee didn’t do anything about it. Derevyanchenko took the high road, choosing not to get in the mud with Mbilli and fouling in a similar way.
Derevyanchenko hurt Mbilli in round seven after hitting him with a shot to the body, followed by a right to the head that had him looking stunned. Derevyanchenko then unloaded a flurry of shots trying to finish him but couldn’t get the job done.
In rounds eight through ten, Mbilli stalked the tired, injured Derevyanchenko around the ring, hitting him whenever he could catch up to him, throwing a lot of rabbit shots. They were out of hand in the last three rounds. I’ve never seen so many thrown in one fight without being disqualified.
At the end of the fight, Mbilli had a swollen left eye and an injured left shoulder. He looked tired and not happy about the win. His performance wasn’t impressive due to the number of times he was hit and all the illegal rabbit shots.
The idea is if you’re going to fight Mbilli, do it in a neutral venue where a referee will do his job of controlling the illegal punches from him. If he gets the Canelo Alvarez fight, he can forget about it happening in Canada. That isn’t happening, and Mbilli might get DQ’d if he doesn’t change the way he fights.
