2020 Olympic silver medalist heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) beat the overmatched veteran Joey Dawejko (28-12-4, 16 KOs) in a one-sided contest, winning by a fifth-round disqualification on Friday night at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Dawejko kept losing his mouthpiece, which caused the referee to lose patience with him and disqualify him in the fifth round of their co-feature fight. It had fallen out four times in the fourth after he was tagged hard by the heavy-handed 25-year-old Torrez Jr.
The referee twice docked Dawejko’s pints in the fourth round and warned him that he would DQ him if he lost it again. Sure enough, one minute into the fifth, Dawejko lost his mouthpiece after being hit hard by Torrez Jr. The referee then stopped the fight at 2:02 of the fifth.
It wasn’t much of a fight as the southpaw Torrez Jr tagged the out-of-shape-looking Dawejko at will with shots, connecting with some big punches in every round. By the fourth, Dawejko was bleeding from the nose and looked like he didn’t want to be there. He wasn’t throwing many punches and just taking big shots.
After twice losing points in the fourth, Dawejko came alive in the fifth round and nailed Torrez Jr. several times with big right hands that had the crowd cheering loudly. However, just when the fight was getting interesting, the referee stepped in and halted it after Dawejko lost his mouthpiece for the fifth time.
