WBO World Female Welterweight champion Sandy Ryan, defending for the third time against 2016 Olympian and former IBF and WBO Super Featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer, lost her title by a ten-round majority decision on Friday night at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.
In the co-main event, NABF and WBO NABO Super Welterweight champion Xander Zayas defeated former WBO Latino Super Welterweight champion Damian ‘Samurai’ Sosa with a good body attack, winning a ten-round unanimous decision.
Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) lost by majority decision to 2016 Olympian and former IBF and WBO Super Feather champion Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) by a ten-round majority decision.
In the first round Ryan used a good solid jab while Mayer landed an overhand right to the chin that buckled her knees. In the second round Ryan followed Mayer around the ring getting countered by Mayer.
In the third round, Ryan finished the round with solid rights on the chin, taking the round. Mayer landed half a dozen unanswered punches in the fourth round at the midway point from Ryan. In the final seconds, Mayer landed a solid right on Ryan’s chin.
In the fifth round, both had their moments. The final right was Mayer on Ryan’s chin. Mayer’s left eye showed some swelling. At the midway point of the sixth round, Ryan landed a solid left hook on Mayer’s chin, forcing her to hold. Ryan ended the round the stronger of the two.
In the seventh round they exchanged rights to the chin of one another. In the final seconds Ryan got the better of it. In the eighth rounds final minute Mayer landed a right to the chin rocking Ryan. Then again in the final seconds another right followed by a left on the chin of Ryan.
In the ninth round, Ryan landed solid rights on the chin. In the final seconds, Mayer rocked Ryan’s head back with a right uppercut on the chin. In the tenth and final round, both had their moments as Ryan landed solid rights to the chin while Mayer countered with a right of her own on Ryan’s chin. In the end, it was anyone’s decision.
The scores were 95-95, 97-93 and 96-94.
In the chief support bout, Xander Zayas (20-0, 12 KOs) dominated former WBO Latino Super Welter champion Damian ‘Samurai’ Sosa (25-3, 12 KOs) by a 10 round lopsided decision.
Zayas used an effective body attack in the first two rounds, and Sosa did not return one body shot. Zayas rocked Sosa with a left hook on the chin in the third round’s final minute. In the final seconds, Zayas landed a solid right on the chin.
In the fifth round’s final seconds, Sosa finally landed his right on the chin of Zayas after being outworked up to that point, who had won all five rounds. In the eighth round, Zayas landed several body shots to the solar plexus midway. In the final seconds, Zayas landed a right to Sosa’s chin.
In the ninth round, Zayas continued outscoring Sosa, taking another round. In the tenth and final round, Zayas continued dominating Sosa, who was disappointed in his performance. The scores were 100-90, 100-90, and 100-90.
NABF, WBC Silver, WBO Inter-Continental Feather champion Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington (13-0, 8 KOs) won a 10-round majority decision over southpaw Sulaiman Segawa (17-5-1, 6 KOs). The scores were 97-93, 97-93 and 95-95.
WBA Continental Americas and WBC USA junior middleweight champion Vito ‘White Majic’ Mielnicki, Jr. ( 20-1, 12 KOs) defeated Khalil ‘Arabetto’ El Harraz (16-6-1, 2 KOs) by a ten-round majority decision.
El Harraz was the aggressor in the first two rounds, with Mielnicki countering well. In the third round, Mielnick started going to the body, taking the round. In the fourth round, Mielnicki’s trainer, Ronnie Shields, encouraged him to be more aggressive and go to the body, which he did.
From the fifth through the eighth rounds, Mielnicki returned to being the counterfighter, while El Harraz was again the aggressor. In the ninth round, referee Charlie Fitch warned El Harraz for an intentional head butt. He was the aggressor for the most part.
Both had moments in the tenth and final round, with El Harras being the aggressor.
The scores were 95-95, 100-90, and 98-92.
IBF No. 8 ranked light welterweight southpaw Elvis ‘The Dominican Kid’ Rodriguez (17-1-1, 13 KOs) defeated game Kendo Castaneda (21-7, 9 KOs) by a ten-round unanimous decision.
In the first three rounds, Rodriguez outworked Castaneda. In the fourth round, Rodriguez continued to break down Castaneda mostly to the body. In the fifth round final minute, a right hook from Rodriguez opened a cut on the left eyelid of Castaneda.
In the eighth round, Castaneda landed a right to the nose, which caused Rodriguez to come back with a good attack. In the ninth round’s final minute, the cut on Castaneda’s right eyelid re-opened, causing blood to flow down the side of his face. In the tenth and final round, Rodriguez’s left eyelid swelled shut, and Castaneda finally took a round.
The scores are 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91.
Light welterweight Olympian Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson (14-0, 6 KOs) defeated Yomar ‘The Majic’ Alamo (22-3-1, 13 KOs) by an eight-round unanimous decision.
The first round was all Alamo, with Johnson doing little while moving around the ring. In the second round, Johnson started using his jab. In the final minute, Alamo hurt Johnson with a right, making him clinch to the bell for the most part.
In the fourth round, Johnson landed a right on Alamo’s chin and grabbed him in the final minute. In the fifth round, Johnson pushed Alamo to the ropes and held him with a warning from Referee Charlie Fitch. At the end of the round, Alamo finished strong.
In the seventh and eighth rounds, Johnson was doing just enough to get the win.
The scores were 78-74, 78-74and 77-75
Light welterweight Olympian Rohan ‘El Rayo’ Polanco (14-0, 9 KOs) stopped Marcelino ‘Nino’ Nicolas Lopez (37-5-1, 20 KOs) at 2:08 of the sixth round of a scheduled ten rounds, scoring four knockdowns.
In the first two rounds, it was all Polanco with a good body attack and little return from Lopez. Polanco was warned for a low blow by Referee Eddie Claudio.
Referee Claudio failed to address Polanco for hitting low in the third round without warning. With eleven seconds to go, Polanco countered a Lopez miss with a right uppercut on the chin, and Lopez went down for an eight-count from referee Claudio.
In the fourth round, Polanco landed a combination to the chin, and Lopez took a step back and took a knee just under a minute for another 8-count from referee Claudio. After the round, Lopez’s corner complained to Referee Claudio for not calling low blows.
In the sixth round, a little over a minute, a right from Lopez on the chin caused Lopez to take a knee for another 8-count from referee Claudio. With less than a minute remaining, a left hook on the chin from Polanco and Lopez took another knee, causing Referee Claudio to finally wave it off.
Bantamweight Floyd ‘Cashflow’ Diaz (13-0, 3 KOs) defeated Mario ‘Mighty’ Hernandez (12-5-1, 4 KOs) by an eight-round unanimous decision.
In the four rounds, Diaz countered mostly with his jab as Hernandez backed him up. In the fifth round, Diaz dropped Hernandez with a counter right on the chin for an 8-count from Referee Eddie Claudio. Hernandez managed to get through the round, fighting in spurts.
In the sixth and seventh rounds, Hernandez midway started being the aggressor, with Diaz countering. (Diaz’s trainer and girlfriend’s co-trainer who should be in the audience, not the corner) encouraged Diaz throughout.
In the eighth and final round, Hernandez knocked out Diaz’s mouthpiece midway. Hernandez did enough to win the round.
The scores were 78-73, 78-73 and 77-74.
