Vergil Ortiz Jr. will take a big step up tonight against WBC interim junior middleweight champion Serhii Bohachuk in the 12-round headliner at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
It’s a fight between two power punchers that will position the winner to get a potentially lucrative match against one of the more popular fighters at 154. The Bohachuk-Ortiz Jr. event will be shown live on DAZN tonight. It starts at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
Ortiz Jr. (21-0, 21 KOs) has been brought along carefully by his promoters at Golden Boy during his eight-year career, and he’s fought anyone at the top tier until now.
Bohachuk has a lot of power and a pressure style of fighting that wears his opponents down. He has a Golovkin-esque pressure style that is a nightmare for his opponents. If Bohachuk can avoid getting caught by one of Vergil Jr’s left hooks, he could win tonight. In listening to Bohachuk’s interviews this week, he sounds like he’s ready to put a hurting on Vergil Jr.
It makes it difficult to know how he’ll react against Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs) tonight. If he can’t handle the skills, power, and ring IQ of Bohachuk, he will be exposed to another hype job.
On the undercard tonight, junior middleweight Charles Conwell faces Khiary Gray in a ten-round fight. Also on the undercard, Gabriela Fundora (13-0, 6 KO) defends her IBF flyweight strap against Daniela Asenjo (16-3-3, 2 KO).
