Tim Bradley says Canelo Alvarez will make an “example” out of Edgar Berlanga by giving him a beating on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Commentator Bradley feels that Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) lacks the experience to be in there with WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs), but he’s hit the lotto by getting selected.
Disappointment with Canelo’s Choice
Bradley, who is high on Terence Crawford, would have preferred he get the fight, even though he doesn’t fight at 168 and would be moving up two weight divisions with zero ranking or experience in the division.
Berlanga doesn’t rate a title shot, but he’s more deserving of the fight with Canelo than Crawford because he at least fights at super middleweight and is the WBA mandatory.
Canelo-Berlanga will be shown live on DAZN PPV in an event that has an undercard loaded with well-known fighters, like Danny Garcia, Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, Erislandy Lara, and Caleb Plant.
“Canelo is looking for fish that was already fried. I like Berlanga. Congratulations, Berlanga. You hit the lotto. It’s a fight that you can’t resist,” said Tim Bradley to the Title Sports Network YouTube channel about the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight on September 14th. “From the skills point of where he’s at in his career right now, I just think Canelo is going to be too much for him. He’s going to get paid to get his [backside] whooped.”
Canelo has fought a lot of unfried fish that were still in their prime, like Gennadiy Golovkin, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Dmitry Bivol and Austin Trout, to name just a few.
“He’s only been facing guys he knows he can pick on, but I’m going to give him credit for Munguia. Munguia was a dangerous guy on his way up. He worked his way to get to this position. That was a good fight for Canelo, Munguia, because everyone wanted to see him against a younger fighter. He tore his [bacisde] up, and he’s going to do the same thing to Berlanga,” said Bradley.
Berlanga’s “Puncher’s Chance”
There’s some bitterness with Bradley, who appears up still that Canelo didn’t fight Crawford or David Benavidez. Those are two fights that Bradley has wanted Canelo to fight, and it annoys him that he’s chosen not to face either. Canelo doesn’t have to fight Crawford because he’s not willing to move up to 168 to earn the match the way normal fighters do by beating the top contenders. Canelo shouldn’t have to fight someone that just wants a handout.
“He’s going to tear him up. He’s a young guy, but he doesn’t have the experience. I don’t think Berlanga can beat Munguia. When I hear Berlanga saying, ‘My IQ is better.’ Are you kidding me? You better stop. You got a puncher’s chance, and Canelo has got a granite chin. You better hope that chin isn’t as great as it’s been in the past. Canelo is going to use him as an example, and he’s going to abuse him in the fight,” said Bradley.
You can’t rule out Berlanga pulling off an upset in this fight because he’s got the power, youth, size, and motivation to win. Being young and having the size advantage counts for a lot. Canelo is coming off of a hard fight against Jaime Munguia last May, and we don’t know what that match took out of him. Munguia hit him a lot in the second half of the fight, and he looked exhausted during the championship rounds.
“He’s not going to show no kind of mercy in the right. So, Berlanga better be ready. He’s getting paid for a [backside] whooping,” said Bradley.
Berlanga says he doesn’t want Canelo’s mercy because he won’t show him any if he has him hurt. The idea of fighters showing mercy to their opponents makes zero sense in the sport.
