Caleb Plant, the former IBF super middleweight champion, went after Edgar Berlanga on social media, criticizing him for trying to play matchmaker by suggesting that he should fight his friend, Daniel Jacobs next rather than face him.
‘Sweethands’ Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) has been calling out #1 WBA ranked 168-lb contender Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), trying to get a fight against the New Yorker but with no luck.
Fans would like to see Berlanga vs. Plant, with the winner fighting for a world title against IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. That would be an excellent fight.
Berlanga’s Deflection
The unbeaten Berlanga’s attempt to change the frame by saying Plant is avoiding the 37-year-old former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Jacobs looks weak.
‘The Miracle Man’ Jacobs hasn’t fought in two years since his loss to John Ryder and hasn’t shown much ambition with his career since his defeat against Canelo Alvarez in 2019.
Berlanga’s attempt to pawn Plant off on Jacobs is an obvious ducking move. He is looking to avoid taking a fight that he could lose, ruining his chances of getting that Canelo fight.
The Ideal Scenario
Ideally, the 27-year-old Berlanga should take the fight with Plant because beating him would improve his chances of getting selected to make life-changing cash against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in September.
Many fans see Berlanga as a fake hype job, a fighter with a carefully orchestrated career, with a resume filled with tomato cans from top to bottom.

Fighting Plant would be an excellent way for Edgar to show the public that he’s not a fake manufactured fighter created for a single cash-out against Canelo.
Berlanga looked vulnerable against the limited opposition management has put him in against in the last three years since 2021. Fighting Plant would be very risky for Berlanga, who is in an ideal spot for the Canelo fight with his #1 ranking with the WBA.
