Caleb Plant was riled up today at the Los Angeles press conference, lecturing his opponent Trevor McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) ahead of their fight next month for the WBA interim super middleweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McCumby’s Path to Instant Millionaire Status
The former IBF 168-lb champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs), who transformed into a millionaire from his fight against Canelo Alvarez in 2021, took issue with McCumby making a video about him on Instagram, talking about fighters that are inactive after getting big paydays.
Plant, 32, hasn’t thought in 16 months since his loss to David Benavidez in March 2023, and some fans would argue that wouldn’t be the case if he weren’t a rich fighter from the dough he made from the Canelo clash.
McCumby can become an instant millionaire and be set for life like Plant by beating him next month in their clash on the undercard of Canelo vs. Edgar Berlanga on PBC on Prime Video and DAZN PPV.
With Benavidez and David Morrell moving up to 175, it’s cleared the path for fighters like Plant, McCumby, Christian Mbilli, Berlanga, and Diego Pacheco to get a chance to fight Canelo to become rich.
As I mentioned, Plant is already wealthy, but he’d like another clash against Canelo for a second helping, and you can’t blame him for that. The money is good, and it doesn’t matter if he gets knocked out again like he was in their fight in 2021.
McCumby has a real chance of winning this fight because Plant hasn’t fought in a long time. He took a beating against Benavidez the last time out, and we don’t know what he’ll have left after the fight.
If the combination of the beating Plant took from Benavidez and the long 1.5-year layoff has eroded his skills, which is a high possibility, McCumby can win this fight.
Even at his best, Plant was never great; he was more of a hard worker with questionable stamina. He’s always been a good six to eight-round fighter but gasses out in the championship rounds. That’s what we saw in Plant’s fights against Canelo, Benavidez, and José Uzcátegui.
Plant Defends His Career and Accomplishments
Trevor McCumby: “Come September 14th, we’ll see if he wants to get on his bike or fight in the center of the ring. All I know is I’m training very hard. You guys can bet, it’s going to be a great tight. I promise you that.
Caleb Plant: “On September 14th, I raised my hand. Like I said, this is his first and last one. So, save that money. This guy over here, he wants to be part of the big leagues. What he thinks he’s going to get and what is going to happen is two different things.
“This guy has been making Instagram videos with my name in it, talking about certain guys that don’t respect the sport, a couple of guys that get a couple of big paydays and they go wallow in their money.
It’s crazy that a guy like him could make a video about me, talking about guys that don’t respect the sport because I respected the sport enough to step up with 17 fights to fight [IBF super middleweight champion] José Uzcátegui [in 2019] after a year layoff as an underdog coming off a broke hand.
“I respect the sport enough not to be a 32-year-old prospect. Do you? I respect the sport enough to be a clean athlete. Do you?
“I respect the sport enough not to go on a four-year break from it like you. So, on September 14, that’s your first and last big payday.”
