Caleb Plant wants a fight against Edgar Berlanga next because he feels he knows he would “whoop his [backside] if given the chance to fight him. However, Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) doesn’t think Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) is interested in fighting him after his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 14th.

Berlanga, 27, says he wants Jaime Munguia or Jermall Charlo. He believes those fights will lead him back to a rematch against Canelo, which is his main goal. He got a big payday of millions against Canelo, and he wants another one.

Plant captured the WBA interim 168-lb title with a ninth-round knockout win over Trevor McCumby on the Canelo-Berlanga undercard on September 14th. With the WBA interim belt, Plant feels he can get a rematch with Canelo. Plant lost to Canelo by an 11th-round knockout on November 6th, 2021

Berlanga surprisingly didn’t slip far down the rankings after his lopsided 12-round unanimous decision defeat against Canelo. He should have been lowered, but wasn’t and you can understand why. He’s popular in New York City and in Puerto Rico. Berlanga is ranked #4  WBA, #4 WBC, and #5 WBO

“I’d like to fight Berlanga next, even though he lost. I think that’s a big fight for boxing. The fans would love it; I would love it. It’s a fight that I want,” said Caleb Plant to the Sean Zittel channel about wanting to fight Edgar Berlanga next. “Munguia, Mbilli, those are all big fights.”

The fans would love to see Plant and Berlanga fight, but there’s no interest on Edgar’s part to take the fight because he’s looking for the biggest money fights possible. Berlanga-Plant isn’t as big as Berlanga-Munguia or against Jermall.”

The fans would like to see Plant and Berlanga fight, but there’s no interest on Edgar’s part to make the fight.

“I think so. Eddie Hearn knows I’m serious,” said Plant when asked if he believes a fight between him and Berlanga can happen. “I’m not just yip-yapping. He knows I’m serious about it, and I think it makes sense. The boxing world would. So why not?”

Hearn wants to rebuild Berlanga, and that’s why he was talking about matching him against a lower level first, and then a bigger name. Gabriel Rosado is one of the names mentioned.

“I think he was asked a question recently, ‘Would you like to fight Caleb?’ He was like, ‘There’s Chalro and Munguia. Those are the guys.’ With that answer, he didn’t sound super interested. Me whooping his a**,” said Plant when asked how his fight with Berlanga would play out.

Berlanga already said he’s not interested in fighting Plant because he wants Munguia or Jermall. It’s pretty obvious what Berlanga is about. He’s a businessman-type fighter who strategically picks his opponent. If Berlanga can’t get Munguia or Jermall, he should look in Plant’s direction, but he probably won’t. He’s too dangerous.

“The IQ, the ring generalship, fundamentals, and my heart. Everything. Even on the inside. I’m a better inside fighter than him. I have a lot more tricks than him. I have a lot more traps than him. Mark’s a good coach, but I have better teachers than him, too.”

No one is arguing that Berlanga can match Plant in terms of skills, and he knows himself that he doesn’t have the kind of ability to win that fight. That’s why he’s not showing interest in fighting him.

“Berlanga, just because he comes in the ring pretty heavy, that doesn’t mean he’s a better inside fighter than me. So, I wouldn’t be worried about that,” said Plant.

Berlanga is not an inside fighter despite being huge for the 168-lb division. He’s a mid-range fighter who has wins over mostly lower-level fighters.
