Edgar Berlanga weighed in at a thin-looking 167.7, while unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez came in at 166.8 lbs during today’s early weigh-in for their headliner tomorrow night in Las Vegas. The official ceremonial weigh-in will be later today for the public.

Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is going to have to fight harder in this fight than he has in a while because Berlanga has highly motivated to detrone him. As he points out, he has an entire island behind him, and he doesn’t want to let them down.

The Challenger Berlanga (22-0, 18 KOs) did not look good at the weigh-in, appearing drawn and badly emaciated, signaling that he’s blow up tonight after he rehydrates for the fight. We’ll find out on Saturday night if the ordeal of shifting that much weight was too much for him.

If Berlanga can put the weight back on without being weakened, Canelo will have a nightmare in front of him on Saturday. This is by far the biggest guy Canelo has fought since his match against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in 2022, and that fight did not go well for him.

Canelo will be at his best in the first four to five rounds, but after that, he’ll likely tail off and struggle if Berlanga is still around. We saw that in Canelo’s recent fights against Jaime Munguia, John Ryder, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Dmitry Bivol. He fought well for roughly half of the fight, but then coasted in the second half after tiring.

“I really feel that if Edgar starts well and gets a foothold in the fight, Edgar’s going to do this,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV, going with Berlanga to defeat Canelo. “I like his chances in the fight because I like his mentality, but Canelo’s very difficult to beat. I will go out there, and I will say Edgar Berlanga wins on points.”

It’s in Hearn’s best interest that his Matchroom fighter Berlanga win this fight because that would result in a rematch, making tons of money.
