The IBF and WBA reportedly still have to determine who is next in the rotation

Two weeks ago, the IBF ordered Canelo Alvarez to make a long-overdue defense against mandatory challenger William Scull, potentially derailing a planned September showdown with Edgar Berlanga. Now, Jake Donovan reports that Scull’s team have called for an immediate purse bid, which the sanctioning body scheduled for June 6th.

Per Donovan, the IBF and WBA “still have to sort out who is next in rotation.” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO) hasn’t made a single mandatory defense of either title since claiming them; he’s held the WBA belt five months longer, but Scull (22-0, 9 KO) won his eliminator nearly two years ago and Berlanga was only recently named the top contender.

Should the IBF successfully make their claim, which seems likely considering they’re a professional outfit and the WBA is 50 raccoons fighting over a keyboard, Canelo’s options are to either take a fight nobody cares about, vacate the belt, or pay Scull to go away. Not great options, but that’s what he gets for only fighting one mandatory challenger in the last three years.
