Before facing Terence Crawford in September, Canelo Alvarez could square off with influencer Jake Paul in May

Though he’d reportedly secured a September date with Terence Crawford, Canelo Alvarez has yet to reveal a dance partner for his traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend bout. IBF champion William Scull and undefeated contender Christian Mbilli emerged as likely candidates, but Julius Julianis reports that Alvarez has instead struck a deal with Jake Paul.

Paul (11-1, 7 KO) is, of course, coming off an insanely lucrative sideshow against the ancient Mike Tyson in November, which followed a thorough drubbing of MMA veteran turned bare-knuckle standout Mike Perry in July. He stands no chance against Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO), who remains among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the game.

I don’t got it in me to be righteously offended. Yes, it’s a moronic, uncompetitive cash grab that no self-respecting commission would sanction. Yes, this means that unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will once again go an entire year without facing a super middleweight contender. I’ve said my piece; my advice is to just take the wins (severe cranial trauma to a terrible human being) where you can get ‘em.
