The good news for Caroline Dubois, the current women’s WBC lightweight champion, is that she won’t have to sit with the frustration of a Technical Draw in January for much longer.
In fact, it was announced today at a press conference in London that Dubois will follow her “draw” two weeks ago against Jessica Camara with another defence of her WBC belt on March 7 at the Royal Albert Hall. This fight, against an opponent yet to be announced, will act as chief support to the headline fight between Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price and will add some quality to what is an already strong all-female bill.
“The biggest goal for me right now is to be undisputed and I feel like it can happen this year,” Dubois, 1-0-1 (5), said this afternoon. “This year is a breakout year for me and I think the goal and the ambition is to be undisputed.
“It wasn’t too long ago that I was at the O2 Arena and it was a real pinch-me moment being there and seeing the likes of Claressa Shields, Savannah Marshall, and Mikaela Mayer. I first watched these girls when I was 11 at the 2012 Olympics; then I watched them at the Rio Olympics, and now I’m on the card with them.
“Now we’ve got another all-female show and again I’m on the card. I’m in a high position, I’m here with two belts alongside me, and I’m excited, I can’t wait. I’ve got great momentum and I’m on a great trajectory. It’s only going to get better from here.”
Still only 24 years of age, Dubois has every reason to believe she is going to continue to improve this year and beyond. She also feels that her performances will only get better as she moves up the levels and starts fighting opponents more likely to test her.
“A lot of people have the same mentality, that it’s the person in front of you who brings out the best performance,” she said. “You see it time and time again. You get in with somebody who is a bit scrappy and for some reason it brings you down a notch. But when you get in with someone who has got good shape and good hands, that’s when you bring the best out of yourself.”
