Junior middleweight Charles Conwell believes he is ready to face Vergil Ortiz Jnr in 2025. Conwell’s rates Ortiz highly, and that is why he wants to fight him.
Conwell stopped Gerardo Luis Vergara in the seventh round of a scheduled 10-rounder on December 14 at Toyota Arena, Ontario, California.
Conwell, 27, is from Cleveland, Ohio, but he spends most of his time in Toledo, Ohio training at Soul City Boxing Gym. Having signed with Golden Boy Promotions in 2024, Conwell has fought three times for the company and all three bouts have finished early.
“He’s a good fighter,” Conwell said of Ortiz. “That’s why I want to fight him.
“I just think he is beatable. I think the tools I have and the team that I got behind me, I think it’d be an easy fight to make. I think it’s a good fight for the boxing fans.”
Conwell thinks a fight with Ortiz could be a classic, a reminder of the 1980s when unbeaten stars fought each other on the way up or at the top.
Conwell is 21-0 (16 KOs), and a former 2016 U.S. Olympian. Meanwhile, Ortiz holds a record of 22-0 (21 KOs), and is a year younger at 26. Both are with Golden Boy Promotions.
“I think I’m overall a better fighter, but I think it’d be a good fight,” Conwell said.
Conwell also noted that if he couldn’t land a fight with Ortiz, he’d also take a fight with Serhii Bohachuk and would also consider fights with other marquee big name fighters in the division.
“I think this is the hottest division in boxing. I’m excited to be a part of it,” Conwell said. “I think there’s a lot of good fights to be made in the division, even if I can’t get Vergil Ortiz next.”
