Charles Conwell is interested in facing Sebastian Fundora, especially now that the unified WBC/WBO junior middleweight titleholder will no longer be moving forward with a bout against Errol Spence.
And Conwell believes Fundora’s style is a good fit.
“A lot of people underestimate how good he really is. I really think he’s a good fighter, but I just think I’m better,” Conwell said in an interview with Gerry Cooney and Randy Gordon, the hosts of At the Fights on SiriusXM. “I just think [there are] the things I have in my game that I can just use to exploit and to beat him.”
Conwell, at 5-foot-9, is the shorter man – though of course everyone at 154lbs is shorter than the 6-foot-6 Fundora. However, the 27-year-old Clevelander believes this isn’t a height disadvantage given the way Fundora, a 27-year-old Californian, likes to fight on the inside.
“That’s more like my game,” Conwell said. “I think he’s really kind of more into my game than I’m going to his game. He’s 6-6 and has long arms. I don’t know how good leverage he can get from that range. And I think that’s like my range. That’s where I’m dominant. That’s where I can take control in a close, tight-range type of fight.”
Conwell signed with Golden Boy Promotions last February and scored three victories on the company’s shows in 2024, bringing his record to 21-0 (16 KOs). He’s in a talented weight class and anticipating the opportunities that are available, be it against Fundora or another notable name.
“I’ve been picturing myself fighting all the top guys in the division,” Conwell said. “It’s a lot of good matchups in this division to be made, from ex-world champions to contenders to champions. It’s a fun division to be a part of, great fights with everybody just mixing it up. And I’m excited for it. I think I’ma be the last man standing, so I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Gordon brought up a fellow unbeaten contender, Xander Zayas, 20-0 (12 KOs). Conwell noted that Zayas is ranked No. 1 by the WBO while Conwell is in the sanctioning body’s second spot.
“I would love for that fight to be like a title eliminator type of fight. I think that’s the perfect fight for both of us,” he said.
Conwell’s recent run saw him knock out the 22-7-1 Nathaniel Gallimore, the 18-6 Khiary Gray and the 20-0 Gerardo Luis Vergara. He wants to take on a higher level of opposition in 2025.
“Where else do you go from where my position is? It’s only up from here,” Conwell said. “I can’t keep fighting the same guys I’ve been fighting. I need to move up and progress and fight better and better competition. I got to fight an ex-world champion. I got to fight another contender. I got to fight a champion. It’s only those three options, I feel like, for me.”
