On Monday’s episode of ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters,” analyst Chris Algieri discussed the risk in Devin Haney, coming off an April loss to Ryan Garcia – his first – making a hasty decision about his next steps. Algieri, a former junior welterweight titleholder, used his own career as an example, describing the mistake he made in following up his 2014 loss to Manny Pacquiao with a difficult fight against Amir Khan six months later. Although the matchup was competitive and Algieri said many believed he had won the fight, he claims the defeat was an opportunity cost that prevented him from quickly positioning himself for greater riches.
“We put our lives on the line,” Algieri said, noting the significance of the word prizefighting. “We’re paying for our future. We’re paying for our generational money. We’re paying for our kids’ money, multiple generations down the line.”
