Newly crowned British welterweight titleholder Conah Walker could face Pat McCormack next, according to Matchroom Boxing’s chief executive Frank Smith.
Walker claimed the prestigious Lonsdale belt in dramatic fashion on January 25 by stopping Harry Scarff in the 11th round after being down on all three judges’ scorecards.
Walker, 15-3-1 (6 KOs), has been rewarded with a new multi-fight contract from Matchroom, and it looks as though he could defend his title against his promotional stablemate should McCormack win his upcoming bout.
“Possibly,” Smith told BoxingScene. “Look, Pat McCormack fights Robbie Davies Jnr on February 15. I think that’s a real step-up fight for Pat McCormack, but that would be a great fight. If he comes through Robbie Davies Jnr, that would definitely be a fight of interest. But there’s so many opportunities for Conah Walker because he delivers entertainment. When you box like that and finish people like that, and sell tickets as well – you heard the noise in here for him tonight – it’s important.”
McCormack, who won silver in the Tokyo Olympics, is 6-0 (4 KOs).
