Promoter Eddie Hearn doubts Terence Crawford will ever fight again unless he gets the Canelo Alvarez for “mega-money.”
The Madrimov Effect
Hearn says he “escaped” the fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov without taking a loss, which many feel he deserved. After that experience, he doesn’t want to fight Vergil Ortiz Jr. or anyone else. He wants the “mega-fights” against Canelo. The Madrimov fight might have sapped Crawford’s ambition.
Hearn states that Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) has made his money and doesn’t want to fight Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, even though that would be a big fight. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Crawford’s net worth is estimated at $18 million, far below Canelo’s $250 million.
With the huge potential Crawford has for earning a lot of dough in fights against Boots, Vergil Ortiz Jr., Sebastian Fundora, Tim Tszyu, David Benavidez, and a rematch with Errol Spence, it’s hard to believe he’s holding out for only the Canelo fight.
So what if Crawford gets beaten four to six times before he retires? He could hang up his gloves and afford to live in Beverly Hills or one of the mansions in Linden Estates in Omaha, Nebraska.
“I don’t think Crawford wants a Boots fight. I don’t think Crawford will fight again unless he fights Canelo Alvarez because he’s got money, he’s getting on [in age],” said promoter Eddie Hearn to the Matchroom Boxing YouTube channel when asked if His Excellency Turki Alalshikh would be interested in making a fight between Terence Crawford and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.
Crawford wants nothing to do with fighting the young killer, Boots Ennis, because that’s hard work, and he might lose by knockout. Boots is like a younger, stronger, more exciting version of Crawford. If Boots Ennis had been fighting Madrimov on August 3rd instead of Crawford, it wouldn’t have been a chess match, and the crowd at the BMO Stadium would have been on the edge of their seats.
Crawford’s Priorities
“He escaped one in the [Israil] Madrimov fight, and I don’t think he wants to fight Vergil Ortiz,” said Hearn about Crawford getting lucky with the scoring for his fight against Madrimov. “I don’t think he wants to fight Boots Ennis because he’s looking at these fights and saying, ‘They’re not really legacy mega-fights. I want mega-money, mega-fights, or I’m chilled,’ and good luck to him,” said Hearn about Crawford.
If His Excellency Turki Alalshikh can’t work a deal for the Canelo fight, this might be it for Crawford, who will never fight again. Fans would remember him for the Madrimov clash, and it would be a disappointing way for him to bow out.
