David Morrell picked up a win in his move to 175 lbs | Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing

David Morrell didn’t have it easy, but picked up a win in his move to 175 lbs.

David Morrell may not have done it in the most impressive fashion, but he beat Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic over 12 rounds to win a secondary WBA title tonight in Los Angeles.

Morrell took the fight on scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110.

Bad Left Hook’s unofficial scores were much closer, one seeing the fight even at 114-114 and the other a 115-113 win for Morrell, who improves to 11-0 (9 KO) in what was his debut in the light heavyweight division.

Morrell did find some tough rounds against the veteran craft and skills of Kalajdzic (29-3, 21 KO), who showed he has plenty left in the tank as a high-level gatekeeper at the very least.

“This guy’s a strong guy, a good fighter,” Morrell said. Asked if he was surprised Kalajdzic was able to handle his power, Morrell replied, “No, it’s seven more lbs (compared to prior fights). Everyone in this division is stronger. I feel happy.”

Morrell also once again named David Benavidez as the opponent he wants next.

“I want Benavidez. Everybody knows it’s him. … I want to show everyone I’m the best at 175,” Morrell said. “Everyone says he’s the bogeyman, but I’m here.”
