Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is interested in a Golden Boy vs. Top Rank 5 vs. 5 event involving rival boss Bob Arum after seeing how well last Saturday’s Matchroom vs. Queensberry 5V5 tourney did in Riyadh.

Golden Boy’s Star-Studded Lineup

De La Hoya has floated these Golden Boy fighters that could potentially be part of the show:

– Ryan Garcia
– Vergil Ortiz
– Arnold Barboza Jr.
– Floyd Schofield
– Jose Ramirez
– Gilberto Ramirez

It’s questionable whether Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would want to involve his fighters and company in a 5 vs. 5 event because it could potentially end badly.

Arum has the fighters to face five of those guys, but whether he would want to put them at risk is another matter. Will he play it safe, avoid putting his fighters in risky fights, and watch their ratings decline?

A Dream Matchup: Teofimo Lopez vs. Ryan Garcia

Matching Teofimo Lopez against Ryan Garcia would be an excellent fight to headline a Golden Boy vs. Top Rank event.

Both promotional companies would face risk, but it would be a good idea to depart from the lackluster match-making that fans have become used to seeing. The fights that U.S fans have become used to seeing in headliners are disturbing. Teofimo is defending next against Steve Claggett on June 29th. No words.

We saw Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom team get blanked 5-0 by Queensberry last Saturday night in Riyadh. Would Arum want to put his Top Rank squad in a situation where the victory wasn’t virtually guaranteed ahead of time?

Hearn didn’t help his cause by choosing a weak squad to face Queensberry, hoping for the best with his B-side players. Using the likes of Deontay Wilder, Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams, and Craig Richards was a signal that Hearn was begging for trouble.

Arum has good fighters, but he might not like putting them in risky fights that they could lose. He tends to be a shrewd matchmaker.

Financial Incentive

Of course, the only way a Golden Boy vs. Top Rank 5 vs. 5 event could happen is if His Excellency Turki Alalshikh offered to fund it. The money could sway Arum’s decision if His Excellency makes it financially worthwhile.
