Deontay Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, believes ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is the only fighter who can defeat undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Scott feels that Wilder’s lean frame, speed, and power are the key ingredients for his victory over the undisputed heavyweight champion Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs). It sounds far-fetched that Wilder would even get a chance to challenge for a world title at this point, as he lost three out of his last four contests.
Fans are skeptical of Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) being even slightly competitive with a talented fighter like Usyk, as he looked gunshy in his last fight against Joseph Parker, losing a lopsided twelve-round unanimous decision against him last April in Saudi Arabia.
Wilder’s Career on the Line
Wilder’s career is hanging in the balance with his fight against Zhilei Zhang (26-2-1, 21 KOs) this Saturday night in Riyadh. He’s already said that he may retire if he loses this fight, and even if he doesn’t, he can forget about a title shot against Usyk or any of the well-paying fights.
Scott is eager to see a fourth fight between Wilder and Tyson Fury, and he believes it can happen. That seems even more unlikely. The 35-year-old Fury has his foot in the door to retirement and could be down to his final two fights against Usyk and Anthony Joshua before walking away into the sunset a wealthy man.
Wilder has lost twice to Fury, and some fans feel he deserves three defeats against the Gypsy King. It would be near impossible to sell a fourth fight between Wilder and Fury at this point, as the fans would view it as a money grab with only one winner.
Scott should focus on Wilder’s fight this Saturday night against Zhang rather than dreaming up matches against Fury and Usyk because the oddsmakers have Deontay, the underdog in this clash. Boxing fans feel that Zhang will surely knock out Wilder and end his career.
