Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez will not rule out the possibility of a “5 vs 5”-style event featuring boxers from Golden Boy taking on fighters from Top Rank.
In fact, he even has a dream fight that he would love to see on such a card.
“Obviously Teofimo [Lopez] and Ryan Garcia’s a great fight,” said Gomez. “I’d love to see that fight. That’s a fight we’ve been talking to Bob Arum [about] for a while, so that’s a great fight. I would love to see something like that. There’s just so many different matchups. PBC’s got a lot of great fighters. If we could do something with PBC, that would be great as well.”
The future of Garcia, of course, remains unclear after he twice tested positive for PEDs around the time of his April 20 fight with Devin Haney, but Lopez-Garcia has long been discussed as one of the dream matches around 140 pounds.
After last week’s show in Saudi Arabia, with Queensberry trouncing Matchroom, De La Hoya took to social media to float the idea of a GBP vs. Top Rank card in Las Vegas, and it’s something that had been discussed initially some time ago, Gomez told BoxingScene earlier in the year.
“You know, it’s a concept that’s been out there,” Gomez said. “We spoke to Bob Arum about it. Oscar’s had preliminary talks with Bob Arum. I’ve been traveling, so I don’t know what the latest is, but that’s something that Oscar wants to work out with Bob Arum.
“It’s always been out there, it’s a great concept. I think the fans get engaged. I think that what went out last week was very successful, although it was one-sided. But I think if you put it together correctly with the right partner and the right promoter, like Top Rank, I think the fans would really support something like that.”
It might have been a long time coming, but Gomez remains positive that such a show could happen in the future.
“We can put it together,” he added. “We have the fighters to put it together right away. It’s just a matter of if we can get the right matches and the fighters agree to fight each other.”
