Errol Spence revealed that his next fight would be against WBC/WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in “November or January.” Then he hinted about setting up a rematch with Terence Crawford.

Spence’s Pathetic Hope for a Crawford Rematch

Spence’s hopes of a rematch with Crawford are pathetic, almost deluded. No matter how good Spence looks against Fundora, Crawford won’t give him a rematch because he’s chasing that bag against Canelo Alvarez at 168 to fatten his finances before retiring.

Crawford, 36, should feel an obligation to Spence for allowing him to fight him last year when he was the lesser star of the two, but that doesn’t seem likely. Crawford only talks about wanting the Canelo fight for financial and legacy reasons.

Former IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight champion Spence’s fight with Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) will show much about his future in the sport.

Fans collectively believe that 34-year-old Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) is a washed-up shell of the fighter he was six years ago. That’s why Crawford made it look so easy, beating him last July because Terence hadn’t been dominating his recent opposition like that.

If Spence’s loss to Crawford was a result of 16 months of inactivity and the tremendous amount of weight that he had to lose to get down to 147 are valid, he should looked like his vintage self against Fundora.

Fundora Fight as a Watershed Moment for Spence

The tall 6’6″ Fundora, 26, will be Spence’s watershed moment in his career, showing whether he should continue or retire.

Losing to Fundora would signal the end for Spence because his slim chances of a rematch with Crawford would be officially done, and there aren’t any other money fights for him in the 154-lb division other than to travel to Australia to face Tim Tszyu.

“It looks like Fundora probably in November or January, then we going to line it back up [with Terence Crawford?],” said Errol Spence to BackmanSports when asked what’s next for him.

Boxing fans don’t believe Spence will defeat Fundora, and they see this fight as the end for the Texas native.

The withering effects of yo-yo dieting, poor eating habits between fights, eye injuries, two car crashes, inactivity, and the wear and tear of grueling fights have left Spence just a shell of his former self.
