Promoter Frank Warren voiced his irritation about veteran Chris Eubank Jr. showing no interest in taking domestic fights against quality opposition. The lack of ambition for Eubank Jr. is troubling and such a waste.
Warren wants Eubank Jr. to fight Hamzah Sheeraz and Denzel Bentley, but he’s shown no interest. It’ll be a year next month since Eubank Jr. last fought in a rematch against a weight-drained Liam Smith to avenge his fourth-round knockout loss from earlier in January 2023.
The 13-year pro Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs) turns 35 on September 18th, and he’s scheduled to face journeyman Kamil Szeremeta (25-2-2, 8 KOs) in a twelve-round fight on His Excellency Turki Alalshikh’s card, headlined by Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol on October 12th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Is Eubank Jr. More Celebrity Than Contender?
Eubank Jr. should have been encouraged to fight a high-caliber opponent for Turki’s card on October 12th because he believes in putting on great fights. Eubank Jr’s fight against Szeremeta is a gimme for him and yet another of the many he’s had since 2018.
It’s obvious to many fans that Eubank Jr. is more of a celebrity-level boxer than a true one and is taking advantage of being the son of a famous British fighter. In the UK, it carries more weight being the son of a popular fighter than it would in the U.S.
A fighter would have to produce in the States to make money, as they wouldn’t be able to capitalize on having a famous father if they weren’t fighting top-tier opposition and shining.
A Career Built on ‘Ham and Eggers’
Eubank Jr. hasn’t fought a high-level fighter since his clash against George Groves in 2018. He lost to Groves by a wide 12-round unanimous decision. Since then, Eubank Jr. has been exclusively fighting ham and eggers.
“He’s not like he’s some youngster like he’s next generation. He’s 34 years of age, 35 this year [on September 18th],” said promoter Frank Warren to Secondsout, talking about Chris Eubank Jr, who is fighting Kamil Szeremeta on October 12th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“There’s some great domestic fights [for Eubank Jr.]. There’s Denzel [Bentley], Hamzah [Sheeraz] for him to fight one of them, but he doesn’t want to know,” said Warren about Eubank Jr.
The 34-year-old Szeremeta is coming off an eight-round draw against Abel Mina (17-3-1, 9 KOs) last February. Before that, he’d won his previous four fights against obscure opposition before fighting to an eight-round draw against Nizar Trimech.
Szeremeta is known for his knockout losses to Jaime Munguia in 2021 and Gennadiy Golovkin in 2020.
