Losing usually pushes a fighter to the back of the line. It’s a normal phase but one that doesn’t take an incredibly long time to bounce back from. A few wins here and there and said could find himself knocking on the world title door.
Christian Mbilli has never come close to losing a fight. Even with his showdown against Sergiy Derevyanchenko taking place in the next few hours, he doesn’t believe that will change anytime soon. Still, the 29-year-old has work to do. Derevyanchenko is tough, possesses a ton of skills, and has the sort of experience and grittiness that you simply can’t teach. Mbilli though, isn’t worried.
As long as everything goes smoothly, Mbilli (27-0, 23 KOs) plans on taking off his spartan armor and becoming strictly a fan. On September 14th, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mbilli will watch closely as Canelo Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga get it on for Alvarez’s WBA, WBO, and WBC super middleweight titles.
Oddsmakers, by and large, aren’t giving Berlanga much of a chance, neither is Mbilli. He isn’t totally dismissive of the Puerto Rican getting the job done but considering Alvarez’s pernicious power and overall skills, Mbilli has a hard time envisioning the New York native getting the job done.
Naturally, Mbilli wants his shot next. Unfortunately for the Cameroon native, however, those who want a crack at Alvarez must get on a line that circles the proverbial block.
Begging and pleading isn’t something that Mbilli is a fan of doing. Especially when the super middleweight division is littered with top contender after top contender. Alvarez vs. Berlanga will produce a loser by the end of their night. And since Mbilli still needs a jolt of popularity, he would have no problem facing the man he believes will come out on the losing end.
“I can take Berlanga too,” explained Mbilli to FightHype.com during a recent interview. “He’s a big name. I think I’m better than him.”
