Heavyweight hope Johnny Fisher climbed off the canvas to outpoint Dave Allen over 10 rounds, but the “Romford Bull’s” victory was not a popular one.
Fisher, a huge ticket seller in the UK, was given all he could handle by a man he’s shared plenty of sparring rounds with, and the fighters were respectful post-fight. As Allen left the ring, Fisher’s father, known as “Big John” took the Doncaster man to one side and said: “Listen, I thought you edged it. But, he showed heart, he showed courage.”
“It is what it is,” Allen replied.
Allen, 23-7-2 (18 KOs), later told IFL, “As soon as it was announced as a split decision, I knew I wouldn’t get it. But that’s absolutely fine. I’m really happy for Johnny Fisher… Hopefully I’ll get another role of the dice.”
Talking about Fisher, 32-year-old Allen – who said he wants to win a British title – said he didn’t want the rematch, because it was not a good fight for Fisher: “He’s very powerful. He’s not ready for someone like me. I’ve had a 12-week camp, which has got me fit, it was the best I could do in 12 weeks.”
