Floyd Schofield and Shakur Stevenson have taken to social media to talk up a possible fight.
Stevenson, recovering from a hand injury, seemed to be headed into a February 22 fight with William Zepeda. But Zepeda suffered a hand injury of his own in his bout with Tevin Farmer last week, and Schofield has come knocking, hoping to fill the gap left by Zepeda.
Tagging in his promoter at Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, Schofield wrote: “OscarDeLaHoya please make the fight with @shakurstevenson…. What happens when we beat him? This will be an easy fight for KID. He doesn’t have the power to keep us off of him. All you have to do is believe and you will be a witness of greatness manifesting.”
Stevenson responded with: “Bro that’s ya promoter call that man and get it done yall don’t have direct contact wit them? Told u who to have Oscar reach out to let’s get this moving.. Begging to him on social media for publicity does not make a fight happen!!”
Then, Stevenson, promoted by Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, who is often at odds with Golden Boy’s De La Hoya, added: “Lil do yall know Oscar already told this dude he’s not ready.. He’s gone ignore this entire situation and they know this is all publicity for them.. Lol I told Eddie let’s see what these guys on but we all know it’s up to Oscar to allow the fighter he has under contract to fight us.”
Newark southpaw Stevenson, 27, is 22-0 (10 KOs) and the WBC lightweight champion, while 22-year-old Austin, Texas resident Schofield is 18-0 (12 KOs).
