Undefeated lightweight contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin will attempt to pull off a massive upset when he challenges the defending WBA world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) on Saturday night, June 15th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on Amazon Prime PPV.
Frank Martin is entering this contest as a boxer who has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Hardcore boxing fans are having trouble figuring out Martin’s path to victory, while casual boxing fans are still trying to figure out who is Frank Martin.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Frank Martin relocated to live with his brother in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 18. Martin got a late start in boxing, but he finished his amateur career with a record of 52-6.
He won the 2016 National Golden Gloves championship and became the first Indianapolis-based fighter to win a national title since 1984.
A year later, Frank Martin made his pro debut by scoring a first round TKO victory over John Edward Lockette.
Martin would go on to win his next 15 fights. A legitimate test was set to take place in December 2022 as Martin faced the then undefeated Michel Rivera. Martin passed the test with ease, as he scored a knockdown in the 7th, and went on to win by way of unanimous decision.
Seven months later, Frank Martin would make his return to the squared circle to battle the undefeated Olympic bronze medalist Artem Harutyunyan. After six rounds of boxing, Harutyunyan was ahead 58-56 on all three judges’ scorecards.
Martin rallied back during the course of the late rounds as he scored a knockdown in the 12th. At the conclusion of the bout, Martin earned a unanimous decision victory by the scores of 114-113, 115-112, 115-112.
Now Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) is about to face the biggest challenge of his pro career when he steps inside the ring to battle one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the sport today. Martin is the underdog due to his lack of experience and the off performance he had against Harutyunyan.
The 29-year-old Frank Martin is an athletic southpaw who has speed, is good at using angles, and putting together sharp combinations. Frank Martin is a solid fighter, but Gervonta Davis is a special talent, and that’s the reason why Martin is a heavy underdog.
Many in the boxing community believe Gervonta Davis is levels above Frank Martin due to his skill set, ability to set traps, his power, and his ring intelligence. Due to the disparity, Davis is the overwhelming favorite, but Martin embraces the role of the underdog.
“That sh*t embraced. You know, like I say, I say bet with me, win with me. You know, like that sh*t is one of them things like I embrace it. I’m eating off of it, you know, it’s fueling me, so it is what it is,” Martin said during an interview with TMZ Sports.
Frank Martin and his camp are confident that on Saturday night, June 15th, boxing fans will witness a monumental upset. Martin and his team have a game plan and they’re anticipating the game plan will be executed properly, and as a result, Martin will be victorious.
The game plan that team Martin came up with should involve simple mathematics. Tank Davis likes to take his time and download the data. With that being said, Martin has a good chance to win the first two, maybe three rounds.
If Martin is able to sweep the first three, the goal is to be defensively responsible, diversify his attack, and find a way to win at least 4 of the remaining 9 rounds. It’s a tall task, but if Martin can avoid getting caught with the explosive power shot, then he has a legitimate chance to go the distance and outpoint Davis.
On Saturday night June 15th on Amazon Prime PPV, Frank Martin will have his moment under the bright lights. With the odds stacked against him, Frank Martin will battle the WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, and attempt to capture a career-defining victory.
