Frank Martin could be facing slugger Edwin De Los Santos next. ‘The Ghost’ Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) says he’s moving up to 140, which makes sense for him, given how drained he looked in his last fight against WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on June 15th.
It would be dangerous for Martin to fight the 24-year-old De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) because he has similar power to Tank Davis but is lightning fast with his hooks.
De Los Santos had Shakur Stevenson running for his life last November in their clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Shakur wanted no part of mixing it up with De Los Santos after getting nailed by a hard left hand in the opening round.
De Los Santos knocked out Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela in the third round in September 2022. However, that was before ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela retrofitted his game, transforming himself into a Vasily Lomachenko copy with his slick movement and defensive skills.
Martin said on social media, “It’s time to move up.”
Fighting at 140 will make it easier for the 29-year-old Martin to make weight without killing himself like he’d been doing fighting at 135. He looked like he was on death’s door, making weight for his fight with Tank Davis and Artem Harutyunyan.
That might explain why he didn’t perform at his best in those two fights compared to how he’d looked in his fights before. Fighting at 140 will open the door for Martin to fight for a world title against new WBA champion Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela. That would be an easy one to make for ‘The Ghost’ Martin.
Given that Frank Martin looked like he’d been spent months at Andersonville prison, you can’t give Tank Davis full credit for beating him because he had a starved look to him and needed some calories in a bad way. You don’t want to give the full blame for Martin’s loss on him being a drained skeleton, but it’s hard not to because he looked like he hadn’t eaten a solid meal in ages.
