LIVERPOOL – Lightweight Frankie Stringer went to 9-0 (1 KO) with a dominant victory over the now 3-9-1 (0 KOs) Tatenda Mangombe on the undercard of Natasha Jonas and Ivana Habazin’s WBC and IBF welterweight unification at the Exhibition Center in Liverpool, England.
Stringer showed his superior skills and size in the first, stalking his opponent and whipping in hard shots to both the head and body. Again, Stringer imposed himself on the helpless Mangombe in the second. He fired in a counter left hand that made Mangombe stumble back to the ropes and the Zimbabwean seemed relieved to hear the bell shortly after.
Stringer had worked out the retreating Mangombe by the third and again sent his opponent stumbling around the ring with a left hook. The fourth followed a similar pattern and, at the end of the fifth, Stringer poured on the pressure in hope of closing the show, Mangombe, however, survived the round and slumped on his stool with a defeated look on his face.
Stringer’s pressure finally told in the sixth and final round when Mangombe crashed to the canvas after a sickening body shot. He managed to beat the count, but Stringer again pressed, delivering another powerful hook before the final bell. Stringer was awarded a 60-54 victory on the referee’s scorecards.
Super flyweight prospect, Mikie Tallon (6-0, 0 KOs) produced a fine display to defeat the now 7-7 (0 KOs) Benn Norman by a score of 60-54.
Tallon started aggressively, targeting the body and dropped Norman, who had recently taken Hamza Uddin the distance, with a well-placed shot. Norman returned to his feet and fought back well in the second, but Tallon still found a home for his shots to the body.
Tallon continued his dominance in the fourth and in the fifth landed a couple of uppercuts that brought a cheer from his home supporters. In the sixth, Tallon continued his hunt on Norman’s body and looked to have hurt him with a left hand, although it was ruled a low blow.
Before then, Cheshire’s Mason Cartwright, now 21-4 (8 KOs), claimed a shutout victory over Dzmitry Atrokhau, now 16-25 (7 KOs).
The junior middleweight Cartwright pressed forwards in the opener, but Artokhau did not shy away from his opponent and fired in a flurry of shots at the close of the round. The two-time British title challenger showed his level in the second, pivoting round the flat footed Artokhau before landing heavy shots.
Cartwright turned up the heat during the fourth round, pinning Artokhau in the corner and whipping in fierce uppercuts but his opponent stood firm. The sixth and final round was the most entertaining; Cartwright pressed with the hopes of stopping Artokhau but the Belarusian fought back valiantly and scored with shots of his own before the sound of the bell. Cartwright walked out with a 60-54 points victory.
The junior lightweight, Jamie Devine, now 6-0 (1 KO), opened the night with a dominant win over the durable Jayro Fernando Duran (15-34, 14 KOs). He started the contest imposing his size and height over the smaller Duran and at the end of the first caused his opponent to stumble back with a powerful right hook.
Devine continued his pressure in the next two sessions, targeting the body before switching his attacks to the head. The 2022 Commonwealth Games Isle of Man representative pushed for the stoppage in the fourth, but the tough Duran gritted through some tough moments to hear the final bell. The contest was scored 40-36 to Devine.
