His Excellency Turki Alalshikh revealed today that the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch will be taking place on December 21st.

Fury will get an extra two months of training from the original plans for an October rematch with Usyk, but it might not matter. Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs), the undisputed heavyweight champion, showed that he’s got Fury’s number with his win on May 18th.

For Fury to have any chance of beating Usyk the second time around, he’s going to need to make the following changes:

  1. Lose weight
  2. Increase power
  3. Maul
  4. Use forward pressure
  5. Stay off the ropes

Usyk’s Potential Game Plan:

Usyk will study the tape from their fight and will likely stand his ground more and throw combinations.

Fury was outgunned when Usyk came in medium to close range and machine-gunned him with combinations. We all saw how the referee saved Fury from being knocked out in the ninth.

The referee who works the rematch won’t want to put himself in a position where he saves Fury, too, and is criticized by the boxing world.

Expert Opinions:

“The bodywork from Usyk, the pressure from Usyk, and the mental pressure wore Tyson down,” said boxing expert Chris Algieri to Probox TV about why Fury lost to Usyk.

“He never got to that second gear where he’s going to drop his weight on you to get physical with you. Make it ugly. Grab your head into an uppercut. That’s a style that he needs to employ to be successful in this fight.”

“He has to come in heavier in order to do that, and he’s going to risk his conditioning being even worse by doing that,” said Paulie Malignaggi about Fury.

“He worked way too hard in that first fight,” said Algieri about Fury. “I think Tyson needs to go Wilder II. It comes down to the conditioning aspect. Being a jabber takes a lot of juice,” said Algieri on why Fury wasn’t throwing a lot of jabs against Usyk.

“Tyson Fury decided to be a jabber and a mover and fight off his back foot for the majority of that fight. Not to mention, he was getting hit with those body shots throughout the fight. He tired late and got away from that snappy jab a little bit.

“Usyk throws a hard jab. He was getting in range of Tyson and hitting him with a stiff jab. So, he was technically getting out-jabbed from the middle distance.

“Usyk brought the biggest bite to the fight, and I think he got robbed from a knockout in the ninth round. We all seen that the referee gifted the Gypsy King again,” said Deontay Wilder to iFL TV, talking about Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury.
