Gary Antuanne Russell won his first world title in dominant fashion against Jose Valenzuela.

Gary Antuanne Russell won his first world title tonight, taking the WBA super lightweight belt from Jose Valenzuela via wide unanimous decision on the Tank vs Roach pay-per-view undercard.

Russell (18-1, 17 KO) did have to go the distance for a win for the first time, but not for any lack of trying to put the tough Valenzuela (14-3, 9 KO) away inside that distance. Scores in the end were 119-109, 119-109, and 120-108 for Russell.

Bad Left Hook unofficially scored the fight a double shutout, with two cards of 120-108 for the incoming challenger.

The 28-year-old Russell hadn’t fought since his loss to Alberto Puello in June 2024.

Russell landed 252 of 957 (26%) total punches and a strong 175 of 462 (38%) of his power shots. Valenzuela landed just 127 of 443 (29%) total punches, being significantly out-landed and out-worked, and 78 of 205 (38%) power punches. Russell also out-jabbed Valenzuela, with a 77-to-49 edge.
