Foreman, who claimed gold at the 1968 Olympic Games, swiftly established himself as one of the fiercest punchers the sport had ever seen. A 1973 mauling of Joe Frazier earned him the WBC title and, less than two years later, a crack at Muhammad Ali in the sport-transcending Rumble in the Jungle.
Foreman would ultimately fall to Ali’s “Rope-a-Dope,” kicking off a downward spiral that saw him leave the sport after a 1977 loss to Jimmy Young.
A decade later, he returned to action with 18 consecutive knockouts. Title bids against Evander Holyfield and Tommy Morrison saw him once again come up short, but in 1994 at the age of 45, he flattened Michael Moorer with a vicious straight right to become boxing’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion.
Though he once again hung up the gloves three years later on the heels of a controversial loss to Shannon Briggs, Foreman remained a widely beloved figure until his passing. His in-ring accomplishments were the stuff of legends, while his business ventures and ministry outside the ropes established him as a fixture in the public consciousness.
As sad as it is to see him go, you’ll find few lives so well-lived. Safe travels, champ.
