Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis roasted Edgar Berlanga for celebrating in Puerto Rico his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 14th. Tank finds it alien to see a fighter celebrating losing a one-sided fight.
The unbeaten lightweight champion Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) mocked the previously unbeaten Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) for “celebrating failure” in his lopsided 12-round unanimous decision defeat against unified super middle champ Canelo.
The New Yorker, Berlanga, appeared to lose every round against Canelo but was given a couple of mercy rounds by the judges. Edgar looked like he was in survival mode from the first and only fought hard in the 12th. Even in that round, the much bigger Berlanga was retreating and not attacking the way he should have, given how far behind he was.
Berlanga feels that he did something special, and his fans seem to think so, too, as he is followed by a highway full of supporters.
“[Berlanga] celebrating failure..lol yo congrats on getting ya ass beat,” said Gervonta Davis on X, ridiculing Edgar Berlanga on celebrating his loss to Canelo Alvarez.
It did look weird how Berlanga was treated like a conquering hero by his followers, but it shows how desperate fans are to have someone to worship. The gold-chain-wearing Berlanga has a look and talks the lingo these fans seek. Clearly, Berlanga is not the next Felix Trinidad or Miguel Cotto.
The lack of effort that Berlanga put in against Canelo showed that he doesn’t have the warrior’s heart or the talent to ever win a world title. At best, Berlanga might be pick up a trinket belt from one of the sanctioning bodies, but never the real thing.
Berlanga is pushing for a fight against Jaime Munguia, as he thinks that will sell on PPV with a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico angle. It might, but his chances of being victorious against Munguia are slim. Munguia has got the engine to knock out Berlanga.
Berlanga should move up to 175 because his reported rehydrated weight of 193 indicates that he doesn’t belong fighting at 168. He wouldn’t have a massive size advantage over his opposition at light heavyweight, and life would be hard in that weight class.
