Great Italian promoter and journalist Rino Tommasi has passed away at the age of 90, reports Massimo Palarchi at boxeringweb.
Tommassi started out as a promoter aged just 24 in 1959 and kept going until 1970, putting on one big show after another. He was heavily involved in the careers of Italian greats such as Giulio Rinaldi, Nino Benvenuti and Bruno Arcari. Among the fights promoted by Tommassi were: Salvatore Burruni-Pone Kingpetch for the WBC flyweight title with Curtis Cokes-Fortunato Manca on the undercard; Benvenuti in WBC title fights against Sandro Mazzinghi II, Fraser Scott and Luis Rodrguez.
At European level we find classics such as Henry Cooper KO 5 Piero Tomasoni and Benvenuti KO 6 Luis Folledo. Sugar Ray Robinson drew with Fabio Bettini on a Tommasi show in 1964.
Tommasi retired as a promoter in 1970 and was hired by the Gazzetta dello Sport magazine and covered boxing and tennis.
