Former super middleweight champion George Groves reacted with amusement when Tyson Fury told the media that unified heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk had suffered a broken jaw in their fight last Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Fury’s “Theory” vs. Reality

Groves saw that comment by Fury as “Tyson’s theory,” and it’s unclear where he came up with that belief. Was it to help cushion the blow of his 12-round split decision to Usyk by saying that he’d got his pound of flesh?

Maybe it’s Fury’s way of saying, ‘Well, I didn’t win, but at least I broke his jaw!’ Perhaps it was some way for Fury to cope with his loss, coming up with a medical diagnosis for Usyk.

Fury was the one who was hurt in the fight. In the ninth round, he came close to being knocked out after being hit by an avalanche of punches from Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs). He was out on his feet, ready to be pulled out by the referee or his corner.

Neither of which stopped the fight, and Fury was able to make it out of the round with the help of the referee’s conveniently timed standing eight count, which some believe turned out to be a 20-second delay. That was just enough time for Fury to recover.

Usyk: The Real MVP

“I made Usyk the winner, I thought he won. A tremendous performance from him. An epic ninth round, and a great night of boxing,” said George Groves to Title Sports Network, reacting to Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury.

“That’s Tyson’s theory, not Tyson Fury,” said Groves, talking about Fury’s saying that Usyk has a broken jaw. “I’ve had a broken jaw. When you’ve got one, you kind of know, but it wouldn’t surprise me. He’s in there doing a pressor now, Usyk. He doesn’t have any bone disease.”
