ESPN reports that Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have agreed to suspend their lawsuit for 90 days. They have reached a settlement to drop it.
The two fighters are reaching a deal to fight later this year, and dropping the legal dispute will smooth the way for the fight.
Lawsuit on Hold
The settlement allows the lawsuit to be resolved, but it needs to be finalized. After it’s finalized, the lawsuit will be dismissed. Ryan said that was the condition for him to negotiate a rematch with Haney.
Turki Al-Sheikh wants this rematch. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) filed a lawsuit after he tested positive for the banned substance, Ostarine, after his win over Devin on April 20th.
Garcia To Take Interim Fight
Ryan revealed today that he’d got a mystery opponent for his next fight, and he “can’t wait” for fans to find out who it is. That isn’t Haney. There’s not a high level of interest in a second fight between them after how Ryan wiped him out last April.
He wouldn’t fight him again unless he dropped his lawsuit. It makes sense for Haney because he’d likely get more money fighting Ryan again than he would from the lawsuit. Without a rematch, Haney would be stuck fighting other fighters for less money and a lot of risk.
Haney is not a big puncher, and his career outlook isn’t promising at 140 or 147. He did well initially moving up to light welterweight, again an old Regis Prograis, but it would be harder for him to fight other fighters who are still in their prime and can punch.
That’s why he must get the rematch with Ryan. Even if his career falls apart immediately after, he’ll have that big payday to live off of for the rest of his life.
Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia jointly asked the court Wednesday to pause proceedings for 90 days surrounding the suit against Garcia due to a tentative settlement, per a legal document obtained by ESPN.
