Trainer Kenny Ellis sees a rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia as one of the biggest PPV fights in 2025 due to all the smoke from their fight earlier this year in April.
It does not look like there will be a rematch between the two fighters without Haney dropping his lawsuit or losing it. If he’s victorious and wins a massive settlement, the chances of a rematch will evaporate.
Ryan would likely be bitter and won’t want to chance-it in a rematch, thinking that Haney could initiate another lawsuit if he loses again or even if he wins. If Ryan sees Haney as litigious, he won’t want to fight him. Haney would likely make more money in a rematch than with his lawsuit, but obviously, he doesn’t see it that way.
It looks like he wants the lawsuit money, and he thinks he’ll still get the rematch. He could be wrong.
Ellis thinks that fans will want to see how Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) will do against Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) when he’s “not on drugs.”
Ryan tested positive for Ostarine after his 12-round majority decision win over Haney on April 20th. Haney has since initiated a lawsuit against Ryan due to his positive PED test for battery and fraud.
Ellis says he views Haney’s decision to sue Garcia as being similar to someone going to the police, and that’s not something they do in Baltimore.
“That’s like some police [stuff]. In Baltimore, we don’t call the police, man. It is what it is. I guess it’s business for him,” said trainer Kenny Ellis to Fighthype, reacting to Devin Haney choosing to sue Ryan Garcia over his loss to him last April.
“Not that I know of, but I’m sure it’s been done in the past. It’s not out in the public like this,” Ellis said when asked if he’s ever heard of another fighter initiating a lawsuit after losing a fight.
“I can say because of this situation, all this going back and forth and all this smoke, next year that fight can be one of the biggest fights on PPV,” Ellis said about the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch.
Again, a rematch with Ryan probably won’t happen if Haney doesn’t drop the lawsuit. It’s a shame because there would be a lot of interest from fans in seeing them fight again. Without that rematch, Haney’s situation is bleak.
Who can Haney actually beat at 140 and 147 that has talent? I see him losing to Liam Paro, Teofimo Lopez, Subriel Matias, Mario Barrios, Jaron Ennis, Eimantas Stanionis and Brian Norman Jr. The only guys Haney can probably beat are the ones with no power and limited skills.
“No, I don’t think he’s a shot fighter. He got hit with some clean shots. He went from the first round to the twelfth round, and he went out on his shield,” said Ellis, reacting to Ryan’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya saying the Haney-Garcia rematch won’t happen because Haney is a “shot fighter.”
What De La Hoya likely meant by calling Haney a “shot fighter” is that his lawsuit suggests that he’s emotionally troubled by his loss and can’t come back from it. De La Hoya says that if it were him, he would have taken the rematch and proven that he could avenge it.
“He’ll [Haney] take about a year off and bounce back. I’ve seen fighters take worse whippings than that and bounce back,” said Ellis.
Ellis doesn’t say who Haney would “bounce back” against. If he’s talking about a lesser fighter, yeah, he can do that. But if he thinks Haney can “bounce back” against someone good like Liam Paro, Alberto Puello, Brian Norman Jr., or Boots Ennis, that isn’t happening. He’ll lose to those guys.
“Tank by itself will bring a bigger crowd, but because of the Devin Haney and Ryan situation, people want to see that rematch. They want to see Ryan do what he do when he’s not on drugs, on so-called drugs. I don’t think he was on drugs, but you know,” said Ellis when asked what fight he thought was bigger, a Gervonta Davis-Ryan rematch or a Haney-Ryan second fight.
There would be a lot of interest in a Tank vs. Garcia rematch, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen. Ryan is now a welterweight, and Tank would expect him to melt down to 138.
Moreover, a 10-lb rehydration clause would likely be something Kingry would need to agree to for a rematch with Gervonta to happen, and that’s not realistic. Ryan would look like a skeleton trying to make weight for a rematch with Tank. It’s too bad Tank requires weight stipulations for his important fights because it suggests that he lacks confidence in himself, and is needs a handicap to help him win.
