Devin Haney’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, says he still wants to see a rematch between Dev and Ryan Garcia despite the PED issues that have clouded last April’s fight.
A Change of Heart for Hearn
Hearn had initially called for a lifetime ban for Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) if it’s proven that he intentionally used PEDs, but he’s changed his view and is now interested in a rematch between him and Haney (31-1, 15 KOs).
Could it be that Hearn finally realizes that Ryan is Haney’s best payday out there? Moreover, does Hearn understand that Haney is on borrowed time as a top fighter, and his moment of being a championship-level fighter could be about to collapse?
This could be Haney’s last chance for a major payday before his star goes supernova and collapses. Only now, finally realizes Ryan is the golden goose for Haney before he fades into obscurity.
If Ryan is suspended for a year or more, Haney’s career as a major player will likely be over with by then, and he’ll have missed his window to get that big payday in a rematch.
Hearn’s Conflicting Views
“It could be six months, or it could be a year,” said Eddie Hearn to Fight Hub TV about how long the New York State Athletic Commission could suspend Ryan Garcia for his positive PED test for Ostarine.
“If it can be proven that he intentionally cheated, it could be two years, three years. I guess it’s going to be somewhere between six months and a year,” said Hearn about how long Ryan will be suspended.
According to Hearn, he believes Ryan will receive a suspension of six to twelve months by the New State Athletic Commission. But he also thinks that Ryan could be suspended for 2-3 years if it’s proven that he intentionally used PEDs, which would be a long time for a first offender. How would that be proven?
Unless they can find a bottle of Ostarine with Ryan’s name on it, they ain’t going to prove he intentionally used it.
“I think so and I think it’s a massive fight as well,” said Hearn when asked if he thinks it’s important that a rematch happen between Haney and Ryan Garcia. “I wasn’t surprised Devin win, ‘I’m not fighting Ryan again,’ because he’s really angry.
“If Ryan wasn’t in boxing, he’d probably make money with something else, but I want him in boxing. I think he’s a massive asset to boxing,” said Hearn.
