Eddie Hearn believes that 25-year-old heavyweight Johnny Fisher, 11-0 (10 KOs), is on target to challenge for the British title if he beats Alen Babic on July 6 at the Copper Box Arena in Hacney Wick, London.
Southern Area champion Fisher is yet to compete at anything like British title level but takes a step up against the fiery 12-1 (11) slugger from Croatia.
“Johnny Fisher is the biggest ticket-seller in the country,” said Hearn. “But you need the right opponent for a headline fight.
“I looked down the rankings and saw Alen Babic and thought, wow, that’s a great fight. But it’s a big step up for Johnny.”
Fabio Wardley is the current British champion and fought to a rousing draw with Frazer Clarke in March at the O2 Arena.
“If Johnny comes through this, he moves from the Copper Box and he fights a Fabio Wardley or a Frazer Clarke and, suddenly, he’s selling out the O2. I like Johnny’s chances in a fight against Wardley or Clarke.
“So, there’s no turning back after this one. Perhaps a British title eliminator comes next, or the winner of [July 20 English title fight between] Solomon Dacres and David Adeleye and then it’s on to the British title.”
