Canelo Alvarez will defend his world titles against Edgar Berlanga on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Canelo Alvarez spends some time chatting with Chris Mannix to talk about this weekend’s headlining fight where he’ll take on Edgar Berlanga. Canelo fields questions about his decision to make this fight, what his expectations for the bout are, and how long he plans to continue fighting. Check out some excerpts below.
Canelo on why he chose to fight Berlanga and negative fan reaction
“I think it’s a good fight because, you know, Mexico vs Puerto Rico, is history there…they always say something, they always critical of me. I fought everybody and no matter what, they say something. So I don’t really care.”
On what danger Berlanga poses
“He’s strong. He’s strong and he’s fast, especially in the beginning of the fight. He’s big for the weight class, but nothing new for me.
“He just know how to go forward and throw punches and that’s why I think he’s going to be a good fight.”
On how much he’s thought about fighting David Benavidez
“Look, I’m better than him for sure. I always fought with everybody that people say I’m not going to fight, just because they want it. Or if I beat him they going to say other fighters, so I need to ask if they really want to see that fight, so pay me good.”
On how long he plans to continue fighting
“I say four or five years more…we’ll see.”
