On the undercard of the Top Rank event that’s headlined by Christian Mbilli vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko, blue-chip lightweight prospect Abdullah Mason made a brief appearance inside of the squared circle on Saturday night as he stopped Mike “Bad Man” Ohan Jr (19-3, 9 KOs) in the second round.
Mason started the fight as the aggressor, and he didn’t allow Ohan to settle into his offense. The 20-year-old Mason came into the fight to get an early stoppage, and in a little less than two rounds, his mission was accomplished.
The 30-year-old Mike Ohan Jr is a solid fighter with a good boxing pedigree. Ohan was considered to be another step-up opponent for Abdullah Mason. Still, once again, Mason could easily get by another boxer who was labeled as the proverbial step-up.
In the opening round of the bout, Mason looked very relaxed as he attacked Ohan’s body with a straight left and an uppercut. After connecting with a hard right hook up top, Mason landed a flurry of shots.
With 36 seconds remaining in the first round, Mason landed a left uppercut that sent Ohan down to the canvas. Ohan was able to get up and survive the opening round.
In the second round of the scheduled 8-round fight, Mason used a couple of foot feints and then scored a second knockdown when he landed a double jab followed by the straight left hand. As Ohan attempted to get up, his corner immediately stopped the fight.
Once again, Abdullah Mason stepped inside the ring and displayed composure, an elite skill set, ring IQ, and the ability to finish once he hurt his opponent. Mason looks like a boxer who’s ready to make the transition from a prospect to a contender.
With the win, Abdullah Mason (15-0, 13 KOs) remained undefeated by winning his fourth fight of 2024. The Cleveland, Ohio native plans on squeezing in a fifth fight sometime in November, and then in early 2025, he plans on headlining a homecoming event.
