Richardson Hitchins says he doesn’t rate the February 22nd contest between WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield as being a “good fight” due to the mismatch in skills.
Hitchins feels that Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) will make it an “entertaining fight” because of his ability to hurt Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs), but it’s NOT the same kind of high-level match compared to Stevenson facing Gervonta Davis.
Fan Backlash
The criticism fans and the media have about Shakur selecting the 22-year-old prospect Schofield is that he’s facing a guy that has never fought anyone yet noteworthy be given a world title shot.
Many fighters in the top 15 come from great amateur backgrounds, like 2020 Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz or Keyshawn Davis, who Shakur could have fought but didn’t. He selected Schofield, and it looks bad in the eyes of the fans, giving them the impression that he’s making sure he doesn’t lose before he gets his cash-out fight against Tank Davis in 2025.
That’s the fight that the 27-year-old Shakur is being ramped up for, so it’s understandable why he’s not wanting to take any risks before then. It’s also disappointing because he talks about himself being the best in the division, but these kinds of fights betray him to be a fake.
“Not A Good Fight”
“I don’t think it’s a big fight at all. I think it’s an entertaining fight because of Schofield,” said Richardson Hitchins to iFL TV about the clash between WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield on February 22nd.
“A lot of times, people hype up fights, and then they go watch the fight, and it’s not what y’all believe or what you hype it up to be. That’s the job point of the media. I’m not here to give nobody free game. That’s for the media and the promoters.
“It’s not a good fight at all. It’s just a man with a pair of gloves that has the ability to hurt another human being, which is Shakur. That makes it interesting, but it comes to skill to skill. It’s not a big fight,” said Hitchins about the Stevenson vs. Schofield clash.
“It’s not a Bivol vs. Beterbiev. It’s not a Shakur and Tank Davis, where you got two guys that are technically and have the IQ. It’s not a big fight, period. It’s just an entertaining fight,” said Hitchins.
Hitchins is right about the Shakur-Schofield fight. It’s an entertaining match but not a good one. Schofield has looked too poor in his recent matches.
Schofield’s last four opponents
– Rene Tellez Giron
– Esteuri Suero
– Ricardo Lopez Torres
– Haskell Rhodes
You’d have to be an ultra-hardcore boxing fan to know who those guys are, and that tells you all you need to know about Schofield’s qualifications for his fight against Shakur. He doesn’t deserve a title shot or the #2 ranking he’s been given by the WBA.
