Jaime Munguia has a fight targeted against Ronald Gavril on December 14th in Tijuana, Mexico. The former WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) is staying busy with his career, fighting for the fourth time this year. It’s a rarity for top-level fighters nowadays to be that busy.
Salvador Rodriguez broke the news of Munguia fighting the 38-year-old Gavril (25-3, 20 KOs) on December 14th at the Stadium Hot in Tijuana.
Munguia, 27, recently stopped previously unbeaten Erik Bazunyan in the tenth round last Friday night on September 20th in Glendale, Arizona.
That was a grueling fight for Munguia, who took many hard shots from Bazinyan. Gavril isn’t a big puncher. So, Munguia won’t have to worry about getting knocked out by him like he would if he were facing one of the big hitters in the division.
The Romanian Gavril is mostly known for his two fights against David Benavidez in 2017 and 2018. In their first fight, he narrowly lost to Benavidez by a 12-round split decision and was beaten soundly by a 12-round decision in 2018.
Gavril has won his last seven fights against nondescript opposition, and he’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies. It’s unclear why Munguia’s promoters chose to match him against Gavril, but this could be as good as they could find.
Munguia lost to unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez last May in a 12-round unanimous decision. To get a quick rematch against Canelo, Munguia will need to step it up against better competition because Gavril and Bazinyan aren’t nearly good enough to entice Canelo to give him a second fight.
Munguia needs to beat these fighters:
– Caleb Plant
– David Morrell
– David Benavidez
– Oleys Inglesias
– Edgar Berlanga
– Christian Mbilli
Out of all those guys, the only one that Munguia could probably beat is Berlanga, and that wouldn’t be easy. Munguia would lose to the rest of those fighters and get knocked out by several. He’s a good fighter, but he gets hit too easily and can be hurt.
