Trainer Jeff Mayweather says Canelo Alvarez wouldn’t beat David Benavidez if he gets hit by him as much as he did in his victory over Jaime Munguia last Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Canelo’s Price Tag: Way Too High

Canelo made it clear after the fight that he’ll fight Benavidez only if “the money is right,” and he still wants $200 million. Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

The Saudis are reportedly more interested in putting together a fight between Canelo and Terence Crawford. It would be less expensive and almost as big financially as a match against Canelo and Benavidez.

That’s a more affordable option for the Saudis than going in the direction of a fight against Benavidez.

Canelo’s Victory Was Less Than Convincing

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) defeated Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision, but his work rate was low, making the fight closer than it should have been if he’d thrown more punches against the 27-year-old challenger.

One judge had it close for Canelo, scoring it 115-112, and the reason for that is his low punch output compared to the much busier Munguia. Many of the rounds were close enough to go either way, so the close score makes sense.

The other two judges had it lopsided in Canelo’s favor, scoring it 117-110 and 116-111. I had it scored 7-5 for Canelo.

“It would still be a tough fight, but I would lean towards Benavidez right now,” said Jeff Mayweather on his YouTube channel when asked who would win between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez if they fought.

“I still think Canelo has his boxing skills, his head movement, but if he gets hit as much as he got hit tonight by Benavidez, he wouldn’t win. He’s been fighting for a very long time. He’s at the point where ‘I don’t have to fight.’”

Benavidez Too Risky

I don’t blame Canelo for not being eager to fight Benavidez. He’s too big, throws too many punches, and hits too hard for the 33-year-old Canelo to deal with. Benavidez is a true light heavyweight, as big as 175-lb champions Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. Canelo doesn’t need to be fighting light heavyweights at this stage of his career.
