WBC super flyweight champion Jesse Rodriguez and WBA champion Fernando Martinez are reportedly on a collision course
The Ring’s Jake Donovan reports that WBA super flyweight champion Fernando “Pumita” Martinez is no longer pursuing a rematch with Kazuto Ioka, which fell apart last December when Martinez caught the flu at the eleventh hour. Instead, Martinez is in “ongoing talks” with WBC titlist Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez for a unification this coming spring.
Despite long stretches of inactivity, Martinez (17-0, 9 KO) is among the best of the best at 115, a nonstop aggressor with solid wins over Jerwin Ancajas and the aforementioned Ioka. Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KO), for his part, is 2-0 since moving up from 112, knocking out Juan Francisco Estrada and Pedro Guevara in entertaining fashion.
If the parties involved can get their ducks in a row, this will instantly become a highlight of the upcoming schedule. Neither of these two are ever in a bad fight; there’s a very strong chance that it’ll produce some form of “of the year.”
As for the rest of the division, Phumelele Cafu remains in talks to defend his newly won WBO title against Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, while Rene Callixto and Willibaldo Garcia will run it back for the IBF belt after their previous vacant title bout ended in a draw. We may not be in the Superfly era anymore, but things are certainly getting interesting.
