Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr  (21-3, 10 KOs) will be trying to keep his career going next month against veteran Daud Yordan (43-4, 31 KOs) on March 22nd. Kambosos will be making his debut at 140 in a headliner at the Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, Australia.

For Kambosos to be matched against a low-level opponent like Yordan shows serious worry about his ability to function. Being matched against this guy is the equivalent of his management hitting the emergency button.

Kambosos’s Recent Struggles

The ‘Emperor’ Kambosos is desperately in need of a win in this fight after going 1-3 since 2022, and he really hasn’t won a fight since his upset of IBF and WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez on November 27, 2021. Since that fight, George has lost twice to Devin Haney, once to Vasily Lomachenko, and given a very questionable 12-round majority decision win over Maxi Hughes.

It’s not that Kambosos’s ability has declined in his recent struggles. His failures have been due to his being an average fighter for his entire career who got lucky against a mentally and physically unprepared Teofimo. The New Yorker expected to breeze through Kambosos and fell apart when he found himself in an actual fight.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to bring Kambosos back with a victory over the 37-year-old Yordan so that he can match him against IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins in the summer in an in-house Matchroom fight. Kambosos wouldn’t rate a title shot based on his poor record since 2022, but he’d get it based on popularity in Australia.

“I will be facing a veteran of the sport and a fierce competitor, former two-time IBO World Champion and WBA World Title challenger Duad Yordan, ‘The Boxing Senator’, from Indonesia.”
