Alex Camponovo, head of CBN Promotions, acknowledges it won’t be easy for Miguel Madueno to upset 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis on Saturday (July 6). However, he believes Madueno has more than a puncher’s chance in the 10-rounder.
Madueno (31-2, 28 KOs), 25, enters with momentum, having upset Justin Pauldo on ProBox TV via 10-round split decision in February. Before that, Madueno moved up to the junior welterweight division to fight Steve Claggett, losing a unanimous decision over the same distance.
Davis (10-0, 7 KOs), also 25, is on a rapid ascent up the rankings, highlighted by his February stoppage of former two-division titleholder Jose Pedraza. However, Davis’ October majority decision win over Nahir Albright was overturned to a no-contest after testing positive for marijuana.
“Absolutely,” said Camponovo when asked if he thinks Madueno can win. “We took the fight because I think that Madueno can win. He has had a different type of training camp.”
Madueno has had a solid career on the regional circuit but has faltered in two of his three step-up fights, including a loss to former titleholder Jezzrel Corrales in 2022. Camponovo remains confident, viewing Madueno’s win over Pauldo as a turning point. “If he had a few more amateur fights and better coaching at the very beginning of his career, [it would have helped],” said Camponovo.
“Madueno is one of those hidden talents out of Mexico,” Camponovo added. “It has taken me quite a bit of time to kind of retool his career a little bit. The good thing is that he’s a willing guy that listens and understands where he wants to go, which is one of the first battles. He was able to change his training and was able to change coaches, just to get better and improve, right?”
“He’s a terrific puncher,” Camponovo continued. “Davis is obviously one of the top guys out there right now. Madueno is ready to roll.”
Madueno isn’t known as a craftsman; he is a mauler who uses brute force and volume to wear down opponents.
“Which is interesting, because Davis is a terrific boxer,” said Camponovo. “If he’s able to figure him out early on, then anything can happen in there. I hope that that’s the case for this fight. So if he can catch you, all bets are off.”
