Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis says Mike Tyson is going to defeat Jake Paul on Friday because the YouTuber isn’t a “pure fighter” and doesn’t have the skills or ability to defeat him.
Lewis knocked out a 35-year-old version of Tyson in June 2002 feels that he’s “not that old,” and has more than enough left of his old form to defeat a novice fighter like the 27-year-old Paul.
Lennox Predicts Victory for Tyson
Watching Tyson work out on pads, I see that his speed is still far superior to Jake’s, and his power is, of course, far better. The punch variety Tyson showed in his open workout on Tuesday was on another level to Paul, who looked nothing like ‘Iron’ Mike in his workout.
Paul looked like a low-level journeyman during his workout, which he basically is. I mean, he lost to Tommy Fury by an eight-round split decision last year in February 2023.
The 58-year-old Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) will be coming out of a 19-year retirement to face the hustler Jake on Friday at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. A crowd of 65,000+ fans are expected to be inside the stadium, making it the largest audience that Mike Tyson will have ever fought in front of.
It’s hard to believe because, given his popularity during his career, he should have fought in front of larger audiences if his promoters had considered placing him in stadiums.
“Zero. He’s not a pure fighter; he shouldn’t be on any list right now,” said Lennox Lewis to Title Sports Network about where Jake Paul is listed as one of the top fighters.
You can’t put a YouTuber like Jake, who has taken up boxing as a side gig to earn money, as a serious fighter who belongs on any list of top boxers in the sport. Jake is capitalizing on his large social media following he has on Instagram and YouTube to sell his boxing matches, which up until now have mostly been against old MMA fighters.
“Mike Tyson’s going to win,” said Lennox to Fox 29, predicting a win for Mike Tyson over Jake Paul. “Mike Tyson’s not that old. Don’t take him too softly. We’re one year apart … You can fight somebody like that and do well because the person you’re fighting is not a true fighter,” said Lewis.
Lennox adds that when Tyson gets near enough to land his power shots, he’s going to unload with a “10-second combination,” which will put Jake Paul down if any of them land.
